Our Pastures

Chicken

We raise Freedom Ranger chickens instead of fast-growing Cornish Cross birds because they stay active, behave more like a normal chicken, and are built to move around outdoors — not sit still. Freedom Rangers spend their days walking the pasture, scratching, foraging, and exploring rather than acting like “couch potatoes.” Our birds are free to roam grassy pasture and are not confined to mobile structures typically used for pasture-raising chickens. This slower, pasture-based approach produces stronger, lower-stress birds and better-quality meat you can feel confident in feeding your family. Our beautiful LGDs, Kate and Gabriel, love hanging out with these guys and keeping them safe as they enjoy their freedom!

Turkey

We raise heritage turkeys instead of broad-breasted birds — a choice that’s becoming increasingly rare, even among pasture-raised farms. These are not the fast-growing, store-bought breeds most people are used to seeing. Heritage turkeys grow at a natural pace and are built to walk, forage, and live actively on pasture. Our turkeys spend their days outdoors on grass with room to move, scratch, and behave like real turkeys. They’re rotated to fresh pasture regularly, which supports bird health and protects the land. Raising heritage turkeys takes more time and care, but it results in stronger birds, better texture, and deeper, more traditional turkey flavor you won’t find in conventional options.

Pasture management is central to how we farm at Williams Valley Farms. Our animals are raised on rotating pasture systems that prevent overgrazing, protect soil structure, and promote healthy regrowth of grasses and forage. Regular movement improves nutrient cycling, reduces disease pressure, and supports animal health without confinement. This approach also builds soil biology and organic matter, keeping the land productive year after year.

Healthy pasture produces healthier animals, which leads to better-quality food. Managed grazing improves soil health, supports local ecosystems, and allows animals to express natural behaviors. The result is food raised with transparency, respect for the land, and long-term sustainability — not shortcuts.

Pork

Lamb

Our pigs are raised on wooded pasture where they’re free to root, forage, and explore the way pigs naturally do. Shade from the trees (and structure), fresh air, and room to move keep them comfortable and active year-round — not confined to concrete or crowded pens. In the woods, pigs express natural behaviors like rooting and grazing, which reduces stress and supports overall health. We manage their rotation carefully to protect the land while allowing the pigs to do what they do best. This slower, outdoor approach results in healthier animals and pork with better texture and richer flavor — raised with intention, respect for the animal, and care for the land.

We’re just getting started with our sheep flock and are excited to grow this part of the farm in the seasons ahead. Our sheep are raised on open pasture where they graze fresh grass, move freely, and behave as sheep naturally do — not in confinement or feedlot conditions. We rotate our flock regularly to fresh pasture to protect the land, encourage healthy grass regrowth, and support animal health. This grazing-based approach builds strong animals while improving soil health over time. While lamb is not yet available, we’re committed to growing the flock as we enjoy learning, and we look forward to offering pasture-raised lamb in the near future.
